Unassuming folk traditions

Along with pyramids and candle arches, there are also the typical Erzgebirge Christmas decorations, though these have tended to attract less public attention. It is often only the true connoisseurs and collectors who realise that the miner’s yearning for light and his skilled craftsmanship can equally be found in the locally produced pendants and festive lanterns.

The tiny Erzgebirge cottages would have been resplendent with pendant candleholders as early as 1800. The inspiration for these wooden versions is probably to be found in the glass candelabra in the Seiffen parish church, an item that was presumably made at the local glassworks first established around 1488.

The typical Erzgebirge lantern with its colourful narrative motifs is also rich in folk connotations. The traditional Christmas Mass always makes a deep and abiding impression on visitors when the procession of lantern-bearing children enters the church.
