Repository for gifts, red apples and wooden toys

Fir twigs and greenery also adorn Erzgebirge homes during the Christmas period. In traditionally decorated living rooms, the classic Christmas tree also becomes a repository for gifts and is hung with red apples and miniature wooden toys such as were mass-produced in Seiffen during the 19th century and dispatched to children’s stockings all over the world.

To supplement this myriad of toys destined to be suspended by string, the local craftsmen developed new ornamental and handcrafted shapes that brought additional delight to the seasonal decorations. They would turn, carve and paint three-dimensional bells, globes, prisms and cones – already familiar from Christmas candleholders and pyramids – to be hung as ornaments on the tree. Moreover, in order to promote skills in shaping these decorative elements, the local vocational colleges made a point of reviving specialist techniques such as machining.
