When the crank is turned, a tensioned wire and quills inside the tinkling box produce a tinkling sound. The tinkling box is the predecessor of the music box. It was already being manufactured in Seiffen around 1800. Later, mechanical movements replaced the tinkling. This marked the birth of music boxes in the Erzgebirge region. To this day, they are produced in a wide variety with wind-up mechanisms.
