When you turn the crank, a taut wire and quills inside the music box create a tinkling sound. This music box is the predecessor of the musical box. It was already being produced in Seiffen around 1800. Later, mechanical movements replaced the tinkling sound, marking the birth of musical boxes in the Erzgebirge. To this day, they are produced in a wide variety with wind-up mechanisms.
